What is backtesting?

By John Russell, About.com

Question: What is backtesting?
Answer: Backtesting is the process of testing your trading system using past market data. For example, let's say you have a system that buys a currency after every two bullish candlesticks. You can look at past market data to see how that strategy would have worked in the past.
